TO-DO LIST (Budapest, Hungary):

July 21st 2012

DRINK: Szimpla Kert. Sit in bathtubs, old go-karts or a chair (if you’re booring), and enjoy Hungary’s most kitsch and popular “romkocskma,” or ruin pub, set in an abandoned building.

VISIT: House of Terror. The old Communist secret police headquarters, stationed at 60 ut Andrassy, are now home to a powerful museum filled with haunting videos and exhibits depicting the regime, including a tour of the basement’s torture chambers.

RIDE: The Funicular. My favorite rip-off in the world—six Euros for a three minute ride (you do the math…) up steep Castle Hill but oh, are the views worth it!

EAT: Rezkakas. Upscale Hungarian food in a beautiful outdoor cafe—don’t miss the foie gras and extensive selection of native red wines.

SEE: Hospital in the Rock. Set in the Castle Hill Caves, this old hospital come nuclear bunker come museum now offers walking tours complete with creepy, bloody wax figure patients and original medical equipment. Most interesting are the horrifying anecdotes, like the time when the hospital ran out of water for two weeks.

EAT: Trattoria Toscana. Delicious Italian overlooking the Danube River.
